Everything, Anything & Nothing

Journal Entry: Sun Sep 27, 2009, 5:17 AM

Hi All

I have been a bit directionless with my photography of late. Trying a bit of everything and not really achieving anything. There is nothing wrong with that approach, but I need a challenge to get me motivated.

So I thought maybe I should just focus on Street Photography for a while. It would be a great way to get to know this new city I'm living in and there always seems to be something happening where people aren't going to be overly surprised when a camera is pointed at them.

Street Photography is a great way of examining the social environment in a natural and unplanned way. A street photographer has very little control over the scene and the people in it. Its only when the camera is noticed that a reaction may occur between the photographer and subject. Which in itself can create the recipe for a great shot. But its these reactions that have put me off street photography in the past. Like most human beings  I have a fear of confrontation (Not having that fear is a sign of having a psychopathic nature). All the books and expert advice on this recommend just getting out there and doing it. Using a smile to break any tension and just being bold.

I have browsed through my chaotic filing system and pulled some of the street stuff I have shot over the last year or so. I can tell that I need to quicken my technique in getting my camera set for the scene happening in front of me. I think street photography is probably a little more forgiving of poor focus, composition and lighting, but sometimes just a little more attention to detail can make a big difference to the impact a photograph has.

I am very critical of the Street stuff I have shot so far and so have uploaded a few examples to my scraps which I will show below.

Hello Again

Its been a while

Journal Entry: Mon Feb 9, 2009, 5:16 AM

Hi All

Its about time I found some time for this place again. I haven't been doing much with my camera the past few months as life has kept me busy with other things. But I'm eager to get back into my photography and start having some fun again.

So consider me back. But please understand that I will not be as active here as much as I once was and that I may not be able to reply to all the comments and messages I recieve.

According to the stats on my page I have 21,618 Deviations to view, 6,176 messages to read and 6 notes (all from people wondering where the hell I am).

Sorry for being away for so long.

Hi All

There has been a lot of chatter recently about the Orphan works Act and the threat its approval has over us maintaining the copyright on all our images.

There really isn't anything to panic about. The Act has already been rejected a number of times and it will without a doubt either be amended or rejected again.

If this does become something for us to really have to worry about then the ARTeam will let you know.

Have you seen my Conceptual Collection. I am scouring the gallery finding the best ideas and images. So have a rummage around in it if your looking for some inspiration. Conceptual Collection

Spotlight on

:iconp0rg:

Gordon McBryde

Gordon has one of those galleries where one look and your hooked. I challenge anyone not to be able to find at least five images in there that you would not want to add to your favourites.

His photography is perfectly executed and he generally works alone and when you look at how complicated some of his shots are you get to understand how much patience and perseverance goes into his work.

I have featured a few of his conceptual images below, but go visit his gallery to see much much more.

If you know anyone who deserves a spotlight feature, then note me with a links to at least five images from their gallery and I will consider them for a future spotlight feature.

Conceptual Photography Only.

Just about anybody can make a conceptual photograph. All you really need is a camera and an idea.

The most expressive and easily available objects we have to photograph is the human body. There is a conceptual element to almost all portraiture. Especially when a mood or an emotion is expressed within the image. The range of ideas that can be expressed is endless and with our bodies coming in all sizes and shapes it makes for some very unique imagery.

Hopefully the features will inspire you to point your camera at yourself or at a friend and give some new ideas a go.

Suggested but not posted

Hi all,

The Conceptual photography gallery gets a lot of DD suggestions. Its not always possible to post what has been suggested for one or more of the following reasons.

- The person suggested has only recently received a DD.
- The person suggesting has already had a DD suggestion posted recently.
- The volume of DD suggestion is so high that its impossible to post them all.

This journal features all the suggestions that have not made it to being posted as a proper Daily Deviation.

Photography & Conceptual Gallery News

:bulletblue: Have you checked out the latest Conceptual Photography News Article. The Objects & Desires of Conceptual Photography. The next Article will be posted soon and this time it will be on body art within Conceptual Photography. So send me any features you think I should include.

:bulletblue: Daily Deviation Suggestions are always welcome. If you come across something that grabs your interest and needs to be seen by a lot more people. Then suggest it. But remember to include a brief description of why you like it.

      - DD's Suggested but Unposted 001
      - DD's Suggested but Unposted 002

:bulletblue: There are a lot of images being posted into the CP gallery that are quite clearly not Conceptual based. I do my best to move these images into either more appropiate galleries or to the deviants scrap gallery so that they can make a fresh choice as to which gallery it goes in.

If you have had an image moved and feel that it has been moved unjustly, then follow the instructions detailed in FAQ #634: Why was my deviation relocated or moved?

I am always happy to review the decisions I have made, but I really hate it when people are rude to me.

Floating Apples Amongst Other Things

Journal Entry: Sun Apr 6, 2008, 1:20 PM

Hi All

This journal is starting to get very busy. I hope its not got too much going on for anyone to bother with it. Let me know if you think thats the case.

I have updated the link section at the bottom and have also added some new competition. If your running a competition, then let me know and I will add it to this list and PIMP it in the AR Journal as well.

I have come to the conclusion that Daily Deviations are curious things. The other day I awarded a DD to someone that had only been a member on dA for a few days and hardly anyone who visited his page commented or faved.

Maybe I picked an image that other people didn't like, or maybe it was because he was new and therefore not worthy of a DD. Or maybe its because od something else.

My question really is this...

Why do you look at the Daily Deviations?

or even...

Why don't you look at the Daily Deviations?

Let me know and I will try and make better selections.

USEFUL LINKS

Just about anybody can make a conceptual photograph. All you really need is a camera and an idea.

An idea for a photograph can come from anywhere. But one of the most common places we find inspiration is from the everyday objects we find around us. The selected features below show how the photographer has taken an object and used it to portray an altered meaning from the one you would normally associate with the object.

Hopefully the features will inspire you to look around your homes for similar ideas.

Spot The Difference Competition

Journal Entry: Mon Mar 31, 2008, 10:24 AM
Hi All

I was planning a really funny April Fools prank, but the more I got into it the more elaborate it became and finally it go so complicated I screwed it up and put it in the bin. But trust me, you would have laughed so hard your Kidneys would be hanging out of your nose.

Maybe I will do it another time... Who knows. :D

But as a replacement I have come up with this great competition idea. Don't get excited though as I am only giving away a feature.

All you need to do is spot the difference between the two photographs I have displayed below. Its a tough one I know and at first glance there will look like a billion differences. But look again and you will find that the answer is much simpler.

Leave the answer in a comment along with a link to your favourite image in your own gallery.

Warning.....

Heterosexual men may only be able to see one image on this page. If you hold your free hand over the image you can see, then an image of some photographers will magically appear before your very eyes.

Time for some old fashioned rudeness

Journal Entry: Thu Mar 27, 2008, 6:45 AM

Hi All

Thoughts on being a deviant

I have been hanging around this site for over two years now and I have spotted a number of different types of deviants who engage with this site in different ways and want different things from it. I created this list about this time last year and now its time for an update with my newer observations.

I list some of the types I have observed below in what is hopefully a comedic fashion.

I am one or more of these myself. So don’t get all huffy with me because I’ve been a bit rude as I am being equally rude about myself as I am you.

Oh…. And obviously I am biased towards photography.

Professors of Photography - Deviants who feel the need to tell you that your work shares similar themes and styles to the work of Ansel Adams/Edward Weston/Philip-Lorca diCorcia and any other famous photographers name they can conjure up. These types of deviants are also recognizable by their unfortunate habit of always being right about things. A trait which in itself can bring on sudden bouts of verbal or even bloody violence.

Wannabe Picture Editors - Ever opened a news article expecting to see some news but only found a themed collection of images. Ever come across a journal that has so many thumbnails embedded in it that it takes 4 weeks to load up on your screen. Do you receive regular comments from people who have nothing in their galleries but have a favourites folder stuffed to the rim full of everything they have ever encountered.

The False Gods of Photography - Deviants who have read far too many photography magazines and now have a great theoretical knowledge. However actually putting that knowledge into practice seems to have escaped them as they are far too busy telling other people how poor their work is and how much better it would have been if the camera had been moved 4 millimeters to the left and you had jumped 16 foot into the air in order to get the best composition. False Gods can also be recognized by their unnatural fear of noise and their frequent ability to be very rude indeed.

Hyperactive Admirers - Deviants who just can’t help clicking on that :+fav: icon and telling you how marvelous you are and how great your photography is… (My watch list needs more of these :D )

Gadget Freaks - Deviants who send all their money to www-photographygear.com in exchange for small bits of plastic they can attach to their cameras. For some it’s more about how well they can pack their gear into their kit bags than the actual activity of taking photographs. You know who you are people and your credit card companies love you.

The T3000 Comment Creator - Do you ever find yourself writing the same comment over and over again… Like some deranged machine that has only been programmed with a few stock phrases… ’Great work bud’…. ‘Fantastic composition’…. ‘Awesome’…. ‘:+fav: ’…. ‘Kill them, Kill them All’…. ‘Ctrl-Alt/Delete’ What do these comments really mean?

The l33t Brigade - I iz in ur gallery liking teh art ^-^

The Number Junkies – Deviants who put far too much energy in increasing their number of page views and then deny doing so in as many journal and forum threads as they can find so people can come visit their galleries to express their agreement and push those views up even more. If you keep clicking on the refresh button and publishing pointless journals then your a number junkie. Just deal with it.

Mad Cat Mary’s - It is a proven scientific fact that your kitten is only cute to you and sharing photographs of it with others will only invokes their rage. This is also true for puppies, babies and bah mitzvahs .

Self Doubters - Deviants who create and post the most amazing photographs and never agree when others compliment them. To some this is a worthy personality trait as it’s a sign of modesty. But for those of us who have to work hard in order to create something near decent, it’s bloody annoying and a very similar experience to having your nose rubbed into something soft and smelly.

Porn Stars - Because it’s between your legs does not mean we all want to see it. There is nothing wrong with a good nude…. But being draped across the sofa with your beaver on show is actually porn. Unless the sofa is a rather well upholstered chez lounge and the beaver is wearing a Vivian Westwood hat and reciting aboriginal poetry. Then it just might get my attention.

Members of the dA Framers Guild - Did that picture you took not come out as well as you had hoped. Never mind. Slap a great big chunky frame around it and hey presto... it looks professional and all Arty like.

The misplaced Myspace brigade - Deviants that for some reason confuse deviantART.com with Myspace.com and come here to post all sorts of rubbish including any or all of the following.....

The Toast I had for Breakfast.
My Cousin Kelly's Shoes.
Me on the bus.
My Cat in the microwave
and so on.....

Your arm is not a tripod people.

The Pedantic Police - Yeah so I spelt teh wrong or I used a roughue apostarphy. Does it reilly matter? Do I need telling all the time? Do you not know how annoiying it is to be currected.

Category Bullies - Deviants who deliberately post inappropriate or 'off topic' work in the wrong categories in the mistaken belief that this will get their image seen by more people. Does that really work...No!

Narcacistic Fools - Deviants who take endless amounts of photographs of themselves so they can show others how beautiful they are. The simple truth of the matter is that once you have seen one nipple and buttock, you have pretty much seen them all.

Artistic Title Givers - A snapshot of the sea does not become a master piece because you have called it 'All alone in a world of hate'. If you like the title that much then go and stick it in the literally section.

People that Poke - Ever had a comment that was just plane rude and when questioned as to why they were so rude the person hides behind the excuse that they don't speak very good English...... If thats the case then why learn all the English swear words first?

Art Deniers - Deviants who claim that Art is subjective and beyond their understanding yet continue to post really artistic images. These types of deviants are the most annoying of all as they are both talented and stupid.

Know it all Wise Guys - Deviants that think their witty observations of the world around them are the sort of fun thing that everyone wants to read when in fact all they are really doing is being insulting.

Do these seem familiar? Can you think of anymore? Have I been too rude?

You know I love you all really. If it wasn't for the different mix of people we get on here it would be a very boring place indeed.

DAILY DEVIATION SUGGESTIONS

I am really happy to take your suggestions for Daily Deviations. Conceptual Photography can often be overlooked in the wider photography world because of the need to understand and appreciate the idea being portrayed.

So please if you come across a photograph you want to suggest and it clearly shows that the photographer concieved the idea before the shot was taken. Then send me a note titled DD Suggestion with a thumb of the image and a short description of why you like it.

I can't promise to feature everything. But I will try and find away to promote everything you send me.

But remember.... Conceptual Photography only.

This Face
This Face by Queen-of-Marigold How can I describe him, the one who is short-lived and yet eternal, he who is reborn each year?

I might begin at the face, for it is here that emotion lives and the soul may be read. In the deep, wise eyes that have seen the birth and growth of the world. In the skin lined by both smiles and tears. In the mouth, quick to curl in a smile and laughter, quick to tighten in anger.

In those eyes we drown. In those eyes, we are the mouse in the cat's jaws. We are a toy boat in rapids, a storm-tossed gull. We are small and beautiful, children watched carefully as they play and war.

In that skin we can see the passage of the years - the watermark

As he went closer so did the stranger. They stared into each other’s eyes. Funny, he had the same eye color as him, which was hazel, with a tinge of red.
The stranger had smooth, rosy cheeks. His face was quite plump. It made you wanted to pull his cheeks and shake it. His eyes. They were big as light bulbs. Blackish fluffs were on top of his head. He smiled at this foreigner, and the foreigner smiled back at him. Showing plain, pinkish gums with no sign of teeth, just yet. This st
Make-up powers by Erinamis Dear Livejournal,

Mom has put on lipstick for the first time in, say, ten years. She asked me for help since she was a little bit indecisive. “What colour do you think suits me better, Katie?”, she asked. On the table, two different tonalities: pink salmon and red cherry. We ended up choosing the pink one, as it seemed a more natural tone. According to someone I watched on tv a few days ago, day-time make-up must be used in order to be found almost imperceptive; it should act as a coverer for all our imperfections. Suggested but not posted

Hi all,

The Conteptual photography gallery gets a lot of DD suggestions. Its not always possible to post what has been suggested for one or more of the following reasons.

- The person suggested has only recently recieved a DD.
- The person suggesting has had already had a DD suggestion posted recently.
- The volume of DD suggestion is so high that its impossible to post them all.

This journal features all the suggestions that have not made it to being posted as a proper Daily Deviation.
